Every Man Can Be A Gentle-Man

Gents,

Previously we wrote a declaration on what a Gentleman is and wanted to provide a little more information. Today we want to encourage and reinforce the idea that every man can be a Gentle-Man.

I understand that the word is spelled Gentleman but to emphasize the two main principles I have hyphenated it.Gentleness does not mean being weak or feminine but relates to the fact of knowing when and how to act with initiative and when to be chill. Balancing the two is what creates a proper disposition.

Being a Gentle-Man does not stem from class, race, social standing, economics, culture or hairstyle!

The Kennedy’s Speak-Out Against Domestic Violence

Folks,

As we planned the Esperanza Vive Domestic Violence campaign we reached out to a few 00.Comp Pagepeople to create “Public Service Announcements” (PSA’s) and our friends from the amazing Wild Records label were a perfect fit. We contacted the great photographer Daniel Funaki to arrange a photo shoot with Reb and Jenny Kennedy. Everyone was more than happy to donate their time for the campaign. I would like to thank the Kennedy’s and Daniel for taking a stand and creating an amazing PSA.

Previously we published articles about Reb and Wild Records and the phenomenal documentary Los Wild Ones that features the journey of Wild Records that won numerous awards at prominent film festivals.

We typically write one article per week during our domestic violence awareness month but we decided the quote from the Kennedy’s sums up exactly what we would like to write.

My Friend Was Killed By An Act Of Domestic Violence

Folks,

The following story is written by Michele Newbery about her friend who was killed by her 00.Comp Pagehusband after enduring an abusive relationship. We hope this story brings a reality check and reinforces the danger of domestic violence.

Michele Newbery Buckeye, AZ

Growing up I not only heard about domestic violence but also witnessed it. Although it was hard for me to see I kept to myself because I was scared and felt it just wasn’t my place. As I got older this changed and I wanted nothing more than to “makeup” for all the times I should’ve stepped in.
I hate to necessarily call it an “opportunity” but the chance to step in and help a friend did present itself to me about two years ago and I did all that I could to help my friend out of her situation. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and her life was taken at 21 yrs of age by her husband just a few months after she had her first born. She was such a bubbly person I’ll never forget the day she came into work “out of character” quiet, with no make-up, showing me marks left from the night before. I immediately offered my place to stay so she could get away and although she didn’t take me up on my offer she did listen and left him.
A couple weeks later she gave him another chance because she found out she was pregnant. She tried to explain her reasoning for going back to him and I couldn’t understand, being a mother myself, why anyone would want to put their child in danger. She said divorce was looked down upon and she came from a very “traditional” family and was raised to stick by her husband no matter the circumstances.Although I still couldn’t grasp her choice and I tried to respect her decision and didn’t push because things were going good. Everything seemed to be ok in the public eye. I wish I knew her more to see past the smile she walked into work with everyday. I miss her everyday and my heart breaks for her beautiful daughter growing up without either parent. Instead she might be raised by the same “traditions” possibly in fear because the man she has to know as her
EV 15 Gentlemens Parlor PSAfather killed her mother and is still free because he was never caught. I’ll always wish I could’ve done more.
When I first heard about Esperanza Vive I immediately supported their cause because I feel if there was more awareness of the dangers of domestic violence two years ago, or if she had more support around her when she first decided to walk away, she’d still be here today. I believe some “traditions” are meant to be broken especially if it means saving a life. Break the silence, save lives.
I’ll always remember.

Why Should You Give A Damn About Domestic Violence?

Folks,

In college I read a story about a young lady that was brutally attacked in a 00.Comp Pagepark. The details of the attack were shocking and troubling enough but the surrounding circumstances elevated the attack to a level of disturbing proportions because there were homes in the area and people heard the screams and cries for help but no one did anything. A simple call to the police would have sufficed but instead many chose to not get involved and refused to take action. When it comes down to it the individuals who heard the cries for help didn’t give a damn about her well-being. You may think my assessment is harsh but the fact remains a human being was attacked and choosing to not do anything speaks volumes. Domestic violence (DV) is a growing problem in all cultures and socio-economic classes that requires all of humanity’s involvement to eradicate.

DV is as a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence. “Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person” (www.justice.gov).

Now that you know what DV is, do you wonder how often it occurs or who the victims are? Well, below are a few shocking statistics that should cause alarm:

- Every minute 20 people are the victims of domestic violence.

- Globally, 1 out of 3 women has been beaten, coerced into sex or abused during her lifetime.

- 1 in 3 female homicide victims are murdered by their current or former partner every year.

- Almost 3 million men are victims of physical domestic violence in the USA!

- 1 in 7 men will be victims of severe violence by an intimate partner in their lifetimes.

- Men who as children witnessed their parents’ domestic violence were twice as likely to abuse their own wives than sons of nonviolent parents.

- Up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually.

We could go on and on with the stats on DV but the point is that the problem is global and affects both men and women. That’s right, men can also be the victims.

EV 15 Mid Century PSAWhy in the world should you give a damn about domestic violence when it may have nothing to do with you? The victim may be your sister, brother, cousin, daughter, son, mom, dad, grandfather, grandmother, or a friend and you may never know they are in danger. Unfortunately DV is taboo in many cultures and often ignored because “it’s none of our business and we don’t want to get involved in their problems”.

Ignoring an individual is a fundamental rejection of their existence and value. But we believe that domestic violence not only hurts the victim but also all of humanity because we are our brothers and sisters keepers. Taking a public stand against DV will promote awareness and hopefully stop at least one act of DV.

Stay tuned for more articles during 6/4/15-7/4/15 about DV. Thank you for taking a standing against DV. Esperanza VIVE!

A Memorial To A Proud Generation

Gents,

In America we celebrate Memorial Day as a remembrance of those who have died while Airshow 15 marine planeserving in the armed forces. Recently we attended an airshow that had many vintage warplanes and veterans. It was refreshing to see the older veterans at the event walking around with tremendous pride. It was not arrogance but confidence that was birthed on the field of combat and a simpler time.

Not only were there vintage planes and individuals but also a few cars. Everything was a testament to craftsmanship and airshow 15 old car and planededication to quality. Touching the rivets of a war bird was magical and realizing that women were the major workforce in the 1940’s (aka Rosie the Riveter!) must not be forgotten.

It does not matter what country you originate from or reside in because every homeland has veterans. The politics and ideology may differ but the fact remains countries armed forces are Airshow 15 man hand on chestserved by their residents.

One individual in particular caught my eye as he stood stoic during the national anthem. The music abruptly stopped but he stood frozen and did not move a muscle. I snapped a few pictures and noticed that his reverence for our country’s anthem and flag presentation was sacred. I wondered what his eyes have seen and what his hands accomplished. Each wrinkle and age spot defied the internet, social media and trends.

Many of the present styles and grooming of yesteryear have come front and center in society. It airshow 15 old man and flagis not uncommon to see individuals with hairstyles and clothing from the 1940’s or 1960’s but we must not forget the generations that forged the iconography that stands opposed to time.

Therefore, we tip our hats to the men and women from around the world who bravely fought and died for their country. Moreover, we honor the nostalgic styles that stand firmly on eternal grounds as a memorial.

Before Social Media There Was Barbering The Old-Fashion Way

Gents,

Recently Donnie Hawley traveled to Brazil for Fashion Week and to launch Layrite. Not Donnie and The Avenue in Brazilonly did he take his cowboy boots, luggage, product, promo materials but also The Avenue Men’s Magazine and not just one copy but a boat load (pictured right)! I began to wonder how a barber from Southern California could travel around the world and impact several industries and inspiring others along the way.

In a day and age where social media dominates and validates “popularity” it almost seems impossible to build a world-wide business the old-fashion way, one interaction at time. Keep in mind, when Donnie started there was no Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or any other social media. No one was able to “share” “like” or “tweet” about him but his name is known worldwide for a style of barbering that Donnie in Germanyrevolutionized the world of traditional barbering. Yes, other tattooed barbers existed but none would achieve the level of success and notoriety of Donnie.

Donnie’s travels began in 2004 and have taken him and his barbering tradition to Spain, Germany, Japan (pictured below with Mid-Century Barber Shop), Ireland, UK, Australia, Canada, Brazil, and Holland to name a few. People the world over have welcomed him and the traditional barber style that is distinctly Hawlewoods.

Before barbering became popular, there was Donnie Hawley. Before there were more pomades than you can shake a stick to, there was Layrite. It may be hard to believe that barbers didn’t always have tattoos and not every shop looked like a 1940’s time capsule Donnie in Japan with Abe menbut barber history does in fact reflect that truth.

From all the interaction I have had with barbers and men from around the world it is obvious that men’s style and barbering has benefited tremendously from Donnie and Layrite. Every relationship was built the old-fashion way, one handshake and visit at a time.
