Eureka! Shiner Gold Pomade Has Arrived

Gentlemen,

The Greek mathematician Archimedes (287-212 BC)  had to solve the problem of King Hieron’s golden crown and when discovered a method to determine if the crown really was gold he yelled, “Eureka!”(I found it). When I heard about how Shiner Gold Pomade was founded the story of  Archimedes came to mind because it took 3 years and 5 laboratories to produce a water based pomade that met Shiner Gold’s standard.

The can is a classic looking pomade container with brushed tin and graphics located on the lid. The graphics printed on the lid are straight forward and classic with no stickers. So far just looking at the container you can tell this product means business. There is no feminine font or colors just classic style with out any clichés. I have to give Shiner Gold Pomade credit because they are bucking the trend and going with a classic appearance.

Opening the can you will find something that should not surprise you because it is clear gold color pomade. The scent is coconut with maybe some almond that is subtle and not too strong. The texture feels very heavy and does not have a gel-like feel, liquid and soft.

Now comes the test drive and this is really exciting because the product is completely new to the market (November 2012). According to Shiner Gold Pomade the product can be applied in dry or damp hair. I have medium to thick hair that is about 3-4 inches long. I tested the product for one week with dry and damp hair. The pomade is easier to comb and style with damp hair. When I scooped the product out of the can I was amazed because this stuff is heavy and the scoop was clean without any dripping or sagging.

To apply the pomade I broke it down (rub in palm) and worked it through my hair. If you apply it to dry hair I highly recommend using a wider tooth comb (detangler comb) first and use a pocket or thinner tooth comb (not the fine) to style. Once I combed it through I began to style and was able to create a slick back and part for a business mans with no problem. The product does not flake and is easy to manage. The pomade dries to a matte finish and if you need to retouch simply add a little water and work it through and restyle.

The difficult part to explain is the pomades heavy hold. The product does not harden like gel so there is no helmet head. The best way to describe the hold is by saying the pomade holds your hair in place and still feels flexible and natural. Almost like your hair is bound together into the desired style and the hair feels slightly stiff. The performance is amazing and the claim of “Heavy Hold” is absolutely true.  The product washes out easily with water.

After one week of testing this amazing product I am sold on it! I am impressed that it did not take half the can to get great performance and a little goes a long way. I will add Shiner Gold Pomade to my personal use because of the great performance. I think the fine folks at Shiner Gold Pomade have struck gold and Archimedes would yell, EUREKA!

The product may not be perfect for your hair type, style and preference but it is worth a try. Of course, there is no perfect pomade and Shiner Gold has set the bar very high. The pomade comes in two sizes; 4 oz and .75 oz pocket can. Also, for the month of December 2012 there is free shipping for US and Canada with a two can purchase. The pomade is already appearing in several barber shops and overseas.

I am not only impressed with the pomade’s performance but more importantly with the dedication and passion that it took to develop. On a personal note, Jimmy, I tip my hat to you Sir and wish you the very best and much success. Thank you for letting Gentlemen’s Avenue be the first to review your product and introduce you to the world!

  1. Great blog. Looks like a lot of new pomades coming around. My first thought though about this new one is that it looks awfully identical likee the pomade i’ve been using for past three years called grant’s golden pomade in my hometown with the silver tin and black ink and even the golden name and almond scent. I wish these guys good luck but a little too similar and lacking in originality as far as design.

    • Lee,
Thank you for the compliment regarding our blog. We are growing and evolving as I type this. You have a keen eye and there is a few similarities but Shiner Gold did not use cliches no comb, barber poles, scissor etc. Compared to Grant’s that has a comb. Yes, the colors are the same silver tin with black writing but that may be because there is not much color that would stand out on the tin. That is the only similarities. Performance and scent are worlds apart because Grant’s is Almond marzipan and relies upon fiber for the hold. I have used Grant’s in the past and it is a good product but the differences end once the cans are open. Maybe Grant’s can send some for review?
